Apple announced today that the next version of its premier operating system, code name Puma, would be released to the OEM market for use on other Intel-based computers. Apple Partner Sony also simultaneously announced the coming availability of a line of laptops running the new operating system.
The new version, to be sold under the brand name OS-UX, will be available sometime in the third quarter with the release of a new, lower cost version of the market leading MacBook Air laptop.
Steve Jobs, Grand Pooh-Bah of Apple said “I am pleased that those people too cheap to buy our clearly superior products will now be able to see what the cool kids have been playing with for all these years. In one fell swoop, Boom!, we will dominate the PC market and make all other operating systems extinct.”
With its release, Apple will switch to a new pricing structure based on the lease model. This innovative, forward-looking service will permit users to access the system for a period of time, after which the software will cease working. Users may then purchase from Apple the ability to extend the lease on a year-to-year basis.
